Now, at the very moment when the Colombian President is meeting President Bush to discuss pursuing peace talks with revolutionary guerillas and when Zapatista supporters are marching through twelve states to Mexico City to discuss with President Fox a bill that would grant Mexico’s Indians self-government, legal status for their language and rights over natural resources, the Spanish Government, on the contrary, is making a new aggressive bid to crack down on Basque independence campaigners.

To this end the Commission will canvas a wide range of opinions (by taking appropriate measures such as setting up committees and working groups) among senior officials, experts in the Member States, the UNHCR, representatives of the social partners and local and regional government, as well as specialists in particular areas under consideration and other representatives of civil society.

1. The Association Council shall be assisted in the performance of its duties by an Association Committee composed of representatives of the Members of the Council of the European Union and of the Commission of the European Communities, on the one hand, and representatives of the Government of Chile, on the other, normally at senior officials level.
