The method employed by Eurostat for calculating the contribution from the various renewable energy technologies means that, as pointed out by the Commission in 'Renewable energy roadmap', electricity derived from wind power and solar energy is penalised in relation to electricity derived from biomass. This is because the contribution from biomass is calculated on the basis of the energy content of the biomass before it is converted to electricity by combustion in a power station.
