OTHER DECISIONS ON LABOUR AND SOCIAL AFFAIRS (adopted without discussion) Disabled people: continuation of the HANDYNET system The Council adopted the Decision on the continuation of the HANDYNET system in the framework of the activities undertaken to date on the first technical aids module.

The HANDYNET system will have an innovatory and precursor role to play in respect of the European networks and the multilingualism factor and will have major implications in social, economic and scientific terms.

The HANDYNET system, which is designed to provide information on all essential matters concerning the specific needs of disabled people, became operational in 1990.

These aims have led to the implementation of general actions, such as the stimulation of coordination in the Member States between the various ministries concerned with the specific needs of the handicapped, the establishing of the HANDYNET system, particularly the module on technical aids for persons suffering from motor, visual, hearing, mental or communication disabilities, cooperation with Community programmes on new technologies (COST 219, RACE), cooperation with the Community programme on equal opportunities for women, numerous activities in connection with integration at school, and cooperation with international organizations.
