The rare aquatic plant Elbe water dropwort (Oenanthe conioides) occurs nowhere else in the world but in a 65 km section of the Elbe river on either side of Hamburg, where the water ranges from brackish to fresh but has a strong tidal influence.

L'œnanthe de l'Elbe (Oenanthe conioides) est une plante aquatique rare que l'on ne trouve que dans un seul endroit au monde, une partie du cours de l'Elbe qui s'étend sur 65 km en amont et en aval de Hambourg, où les eaux sont saumâtres à douces mais fortement soumises à l'influence des marées.

As home to several species of birds and various other habitats and plant species (including a highly threatened species of endemic plant called the "Schierlings Wasserfenchel" or hemlock water dropwort and habitats listed in the annexes to the Community directives on nature conservation), it is classified as a site of Community interest.

Il s'agit d'un site d'intérêt communautaire car il héberge plusieurs espèces d'oiseaux ainsi que des espèces d'habitats et de plantes (dont une espèce de plante endémique très menacée «Schierlings Wasserfenchel» et des habitats inscrits dans les annexes des directives communautaires sur la protection de la nature).
