As a consequence of that, we embarked on a study called PREMiSe. This is a prospective, randomized, placebo- controlled trial for MS. Thirty patients have been enrolled in that study, ten patients in phase I, to test the safety and eligibility of the procedure; and then twenty patients have been randomized to the sham, which is the placebo or treatment arm.

The only way you will really know if that is based on an expectation or placebo effect or is the real thing is if you do the type of double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study that was funded by the CIHR and the MS Society in Canada.

In my opinion, as I mentioned here, it is a little premature to organize the studies based on 600 or 700 patients or 1,000 patients when we do not know, in smaller placebo-controlled trials, 100 to 200 people, which are called phase I/II studies, whether there is clearly a positive sign to conduct larger randomized control trials.

Comme je l'ai dit tout à l'heure, il serait selon moi un peu prématuré de mener une étude auprès de 600, de 700 ou de 1 000 patients puisque des études de phase I et II plus modestes, contrôlées par placebo et menées auprès de 100 à 200 personnes n'ont pas démontré clairement le bien-fondé d'une étude randomisée et contrôlée plus importante.

However, the use of a placebo control design has been strongly criticized where there is an existing established effective treatment for the disease being studied; such criticisms have been aimed prominently at research in psychiatry, where research subjects enrolled in the placebo arm of the trial might have to be deprived of their much needed existing treatment, suffer potential negative effects of withdrawal and potentially relapse into a state of mental illness for the duration of the study.
