(3)Southern Gas Corridor ("SGC"): infrastructure for the transmission of gas from the Caspian Basin, Central Asia, the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean Basin to the Union, to enhance diversification of gas supply.

The briefing included, amongst other issues, the Rio+20 UN Conference on sustainable development (Rio de Janeiro, 20-22 June), the EU-OPEC ministerial meeting (Brussels, 28 June), the EU-China High Level Meeting on Energy (Brussels, 3 May), the EU-India Summit (New Delhi, 10 February), developments in the Southern Corridor, EU-Russia relations, the EU-Russia-Belarus negotiations, EU-US relations and the first meeting of the Strategic Group for International Energy Cooperation (Brussels, 24 April).

It constitutes a milestone in the realisation of the Southern Corridor and is the first operational decision as part of a co-ordinated and united external energy strategy, as proposed in the European Commission's Communication on security of energy supply and international cooperation - "The EU Energy Policy: Engaging with Partners beyond Our Borders" - adopted on 7 September.

The briefing included, amongst other issues, the EU-OPEC ministerial meeting (Vienna, 27 June), good functioning of the EU-US Energy Council, developments in North Africa, the Southern Corridor, the first session of the assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Abu Dhabi, 4-5 April), the second Clean Energy Ministerial meeting (Abu Dhabi, 6-7 April), the EU-Japan Summit (Brussels, 28 May) and the EU-Russia Summit (Nizhny Novgorod, 9-10 June).

According to Loyola de Palacio, Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of energy and transport: "The transport and energy sectors, which are of key importance to the success of the Euro-Mediterranean free trade area scheduled to be in place by 2010, are also crucial in terms of cooperation between the Union and the countries on the southern fringes of the Mediterranean on the security of energy supplies and environmental protection".
