Il existe une différence marquée entre ces deux aspects. Du bois, d’origine légale, peut être récolté d’une manière qui porte atteinte à l’environnement, au moyen par exemple d’un défrichage autorisé. De même, du bois d’origine illégale, peut provenir d’une source durable, comme c’est le cas du bois récolté dans le cadre de systèmes de gestion indigène qui, tout en étant respectueux de l’environnement, ne se soumettent pas aux exigences juridiques officielles.

There is a clear difference between the two: legal timber can be harvested in an unsustainable way, for example through authorised land clearance; and illegal timber can come from sustainable sources, as in the case of timber harvested under indigenous management systems which are sustainable but do not comply with formal legal requirements.
