In May 1941, the Newfoundland Escort Force was born when almost all the ships that the Royal Canadian Navy, RCN, could muster, Agassiz, Alberni, Chambly, Cobalt, Collingwood, Orillia and Wetaskiwin, sailed for St. John's. Thereafter, the NEF was to play a crucial role in the Newfy to Derry run and " Newfyjohn" was affectionately known all over the world.
