Aware of the importance of the energy sector in Tunisia's sustainable economic development, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Entreprise Tunisienne d’Activités Pétrolières (ETAP) have concluded a EUR 150m financing agreement (equivalent to 325m Tunisian dinars) to operate the "Nawara" concession in the south of the country.

Today in Brussels, Philippe de Fontaine Vive, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), and Abdelhamid Triki, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, announced a EUR 140 million (TND 275 million) loan promoting economic development and employment in Tunisia in a further demonstration of the EIB’s specific commitment to supporting the Mediterranean countries in transition, which was strongly reaffirmed at the G8 summit in Deauville.

This loan demonstrates the EIB’s ability to take quick and effective action in a strategic sector for Tunisia’s economy: the phosphates industry accounts for more than 2.6% of the country’s GDP, providing additional export revenues into the bargain. It is further evidence of the EIB’s concrete support for the Mediterranean countries’ democratic transition. It is only fourth months since the Deauville G8 summit and two loans totalling EUR 300 million (nearly TND 600 million) in support of employment and economic development in Tunisia have been signed already.

Since 1996 the EU has given financial assistance to Tunisia in the form of grants and loans worth ECU 294 million (360 million dinar) aimed chiefly at underpinning the country's economic transition and bolstering the private sector ahead of Tunisia's participation in the Euro-Mediterranean economic area.

The Commission has approved ECU 50 million (around 61 million Tunisian dinar) for the integrated rural development and natural resource management project in eight provinces of northern and central Tunisia, the aim of which is to even out regional disparities by realising three objectives: boosting the incomes of disadvantaged rural populations; improving their living conditions; protecting natural resources, in particular water, as part of a sustainable and participatory development effort.
