Another initiative we are taking for the Dolly Varden char is we are working on developing an integrated management plan for all the populations west of the Mackenzie River, and those are our attempts to precede the COSEWIC, Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada, process. They are considering listing Dolly Varden, and the Species At Risk Act has a responsibility to acknowledge any existing plans, so those are our efforts to have that in place ahead of time.

Le Dolly Varden est une sorte d'omble chevalier que l'on juge en péril, non pas parce qu'il a été surpêché commercialement, mais simplement parce que les collectivités ont eu besoin de ce poisson et que des phénomènes climatiques et géographiques — dans un cas en particulier, un glissement de terrain a bloqué la zone de frai — se sont ligués pour rendre difficile l'approvisionnement en Dolly Varden lorsque ces poissons traversent les eaux des collectivités au cours de leur migration, chose qu'ils ont faite pendant des siècles et qu'ils semblent avoir cessé de faire maintenant.

Dolly Varden is a form of Arctic char that is being considered as a species at risk, not because of commercial overfishing but simply because the communities have needed the fish and climatic events and geographic events — in one case a landslide that closed off the spawning area — have conspired to make it difficult for those communities to have a sufficient supply of Dolly Varden as they migrate past them, which they have done for centuries and seem to be failing to do now.
