As regards opening of the hunting season, the French legislation, there is often an overlap between hunting and the period of dependence of young birds - of sometimes more than 7 weeks. For example, in the Département of 'Loire Atlantique', the hunting season is opened for surface feeding ducks and for the Coot, Fulica atra, on the third Sunday of July, whereas the young birds of these species will not all have fledged (i.e. flown) until between 1 and 10 September.
