Notes the need for specific attention to be given to the situation of assisting spouses, most of them women, in small and medium-sized enterprises and in farming, on whose work the successful running of family businesses depends, but who do not always have access to social security, training or information; reiterates its call for improvement of the Council Directive of 11 December 1986 on the application of the principle of equal treatment between men and women engaged in an activity, including agriculture, in a self-employed capacity and on the protection of motherhood (86/613/EEC).
