Ce programme vient relayer le programme de genie moleculaire dont il prolonge, amplifie et complete l'actions : il est dote d'un budget plus important (55 millions d'ECUs dans l'etat actuel, vraisemblablement davantage apres la revision du programme) et couvre, a cote des secteurs deja abordes, de nouveaux secteurs de recherche : l'etude de l'architecture des proteines, les applications de la biotechnologie aux micro- organismes industriels, les methodes "in-vitro" d'analyse des proprietes pharmacologiques et toxicologiques des molecules, la determination des risques lies aux manipulations genetiques.
