Dall'entrata in vigore del trattato di Amsterdam[1] nel 1999, l'UE si è adoperata per istituire un regime comune europeo in materia di asilo , il cui obiettivo principale è creare gradualmente convergenza a livello UE nelle questioni inerenti all'asilo, stabilendo norme minime comuni, instaurando una procedura comune in questa materia e uno status uniforme e rafforzando la cooperazione pratica.
Since the entry into force of the Treaty of Amsterdam[1] in 1999, the EU has been working toward the establishment of a Common European Asylum System (CEAS) , the principal purpose of which is to bring about progressive EU-wide convergence in asylum matters, by setting common minimum standards, establishing a common asylum procedure and uniform status, as well as by strengthening practical cooperation.
