What has happened is that, because the commercial Mexican farmers made a free trade agreement with the United States and Canada in order to export their commercially grown fruits and vegetables and things of that nature, the Americans gained access to the markets for maize and beans and things like that, which are traditionally grown by subsistence farmers, and have wiped out the subsistence farmers.
