The more cynical among us would say that basically, in a capitalist society, the powers that be want to maintain the gap between rich and poor, between the weak and the well-heeled, between the underprivileged and the affluent; that this is a way to motivate those at the bottom of the ladder to work their fingers to the bone to achieve a better place in the sun and thus contribute to the functioning of our economy.
Des mauvaises langues et des esprits mal tournés diraient qu'au fond, dans une société capitaliste, les pouvoirs veulent maintenir le fossé entre pauvres et riches, entre faibles et fortunés, entre dépourvus et nantis; que c'est une manière de motiver ceux et celles qui sont au bas de l'échelle à travailler d'arrache-pied pour se mériter une meilleure place au soleil et, par le fait même, de faire fonctionner l'économie.
