Lamy, Commission (FR) Madam President, the question concerns the conclusions drawn by the Commission in the light of that abolition of international textile quotas that will come into force as of 31 December of this year following a decision taken ten years ago at multilateral level by the World Trade Organisation. Ten years ago, we jointly set the date for the abolition of quotas for the end of this year.

Knowing how sensitive textiles and clothing are in a large number of countries, the European Commission organised an international conference on 5 and 6 May last, which was attended by delegates from over 80 countries.

The symposium "The Future of Textiles and Clothing Trade after 2005" will take place in Brussels on 5-6 May 2003 and it will gather participants from around the world, including trade and industry representatives, senior policy makers of governments and international organisations, trade unionists, and representatives of NGOs and consumers.

During the Internal Market Week, a series of conferences were organised in Thessalonika, Patras and Athens on such issues as access to investment funds for small and medium-sized enterprises, the CE Mark, company taxation, regional aids and trade rules for the textiles sector, road haulage, financial services, VAT, public procurement, free movement of people (including frontier controls on non-EU nationals), recognition of professional qualifications a ...[+++]nd transfer of social security rights.
