According to the records of the Venetian municipal authorities, quoted by Georg Kodinetz, Professor at the Animal Husbandry Institute under the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Zagreb, the first Zagorje turkeys were brought into Hrvatsko Zagorje from Italy and the first roast turkey was served at the table of the Pavlins of Lepoglava on the Feast of the Assumption in 1561, after which they started to be reared in the area.
D’après les archives des autorités municipales vénitiennes, citées par Georg Kodinetz, professeur à l’institut de production animale auprès de la faculté agronomique de l’université de Zagreb, elle aurait été rapportée d’Italie et la première dinde rôtie aurait été servie à la table des moines pauliniens de Lepoglava en 1561 à l’occasion de la fête de l’Assomption. C’est alors que l’élevage de dindes de Zagorje débuta.
