Its legal meaning has been interpreted to be “any illness, disorder or abnormal condition which impairs the human mind from its functioning, excluding, however, self-induced states caused by alcohol or drugs as well as transitory states such as hysteria and concussion” (23) The defence based on mental disorder requires the disease to be of such intensity as to render the accused incapable of knowing right from wrong in the abstract sense and applying that knowledge in a rational way to the alleged criminal act (24)
