Points out that there is a lack of relevant statistics on transports of goods by mode - including multimodal transport - between (sub)regions of origin/destination and by other commodity groups, seriously hampering commercial and public policy initiatives which makes comparison between short sea shipping and other modes of transport more difficult; even reliable figures on general tonne/km transport by mode are ...[+++]currently lacking; asks for relevant, accurate and comparable studies in this area; states however that the work to improve statistical information should go on in parallel with the more urgent task of developing strategies between the industries involved and policy makers at regional, national and European level;
