A passport was defined by Lord Alverstone C.J. in R. v. Brailsford as " a document issued in the name of the Sovereign on the responsibility of a Minister of the Crown to a named individual, intended to be presented to the governments of foreign nations and to be used for that individual's protection as a British subject in foreign countries" .
Dans l'affaire R. c. Brailsford, lord Alverstone a défini le passeport comme «un document délivré au nom du souverain, sous la responsabilité d'un ministre, à une personne nommée aux fins de présentation aux autorités de pays étrangers. Il sert à protéger cette personne en tant que sujet britannique dans les pays étrangers».
