(a) In the countries of the European Union, consumers and the public in general are calling increasingly for agricultural production to involve fewer and fewer chemical fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides with a view to both limiting the amount of residues in the environment and protecting human health. At the same time, the pressure of international competition is requiring our farmers to maintain, or even increase, yields, while reducing inputs.
