Mr Van Miert stressed the importance of sea transport to the Community: 90% of the goods traded with third countries and more than a third of the goods traded within the Community went by sea.

Addressing the Belgian section of the Permanent International Association of Naval Congresses, Mr Van Miert said that sea transport was of great importance to the Community, accounting for over a third of intra- Community goods trade and a significant proportion of its foreign trade.
