ENVIREG will make it possible to launch innovative, model projects which, at the same time as facilitating the development of these areas, will also contribute to the implementation of the Community's policy on the environment.

The ENVIREG initiative is designed to promote the environment and economic development and mainly concerns the coastal areas of the regions in the Community lagging behind in their development.

An important aim of ENVIREG is to help regional and local authorities learn more about environmental control and management. This will be achieved through technical assistance, including the organization of a network of international experts to which the authorities can refer.

On a proposal from Mr Bruce MILLAN, Commissioner for Regional Policies, and after receiving the opinions of the European Parliament and the Advisory Committee of representatives of the Member States, the Commission recently adopted the final text of the notice on the Community initiative ENVIREG.

The specific objectives of ENVIREG are to: - reduce pollution in coastal areas, particularly the Mediterranean regions, by contributing to the treatment, recycling and re-use of waste water and urban waste in average-sized towns; - promote coastal area planning in such a way as to preserve the natural beauty and protect and enhance the biotopes of those areas; - contribute to the control and management of toxic and hazardous industrial waste on the one hand, by encouraging firms to produce less waste and to use production processes that are less costly in terms of consumption of water and raw materials; - develop know-how and training ...[+++] in the above fields.
