A scientific mission that was sent to the island last June by the Commission, in cooperation with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO - the regional WHO body) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, found that the disease has similar symptoms to the Strachan syndrome, and is primarily caused by malnutrition, although tobacco and alcohol may also play a role.
Suivant les conclusions d'une mission scientifique envoyée sur place en juin dernier par la Commission en collaboration avec l'Organisation Panaméricaine de la Santé ( agence régionale de l'OMS) et la Fédération Internationale de la Croix Rouge, la maladie présente des symptomes analogues au syndrome de Strachan et serait essentiellement due à la malnutrition, sans exclure les effets néfastes du tabac et de l'alcool.
