For its part, the Commission is in a position to affirm that the Prestige - a single-hull oil tanker which, on account of its age, would have been taken out of service already if the phase-out timetable originally proposed by the Commission had been kept to - sank in severe weather conditions. The cause has yet to be fully proven: probably the structure of the vessel was too weak to withstand the pounding of the seas or perhaps the vessel struck a floating object.
