The debate was held in response to the call by the Lisbon European Council (23/24 March 2000) which, in its conclusions, had asked the Education Council to undertake a general reflection on the concrete future objectives of education systems, focusing on common concerns and priorities while respecting national diversity, with a view to contributing to the Luxembourg and Cardiff processes and presenting a broader report to the European Council in the Spring of 2001 and to contribute ...[+++] in this way to the achievement of the new strategic objective for the coming decade, i.e. to ensuring that the European Union becomes the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world capable of sustainable economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion.

In this respect e-Health can play a role in the follow-up to the Commission communication and to the recommendations of the High Level Reflection Process on Patient Mobility and healthcare developments in the European Union. e-Health could provide technical solutions for information sharing at European level and contribute to the networking of European centres of reference. e-Health could also provide technical support to European cooperation on evaluating health technology.
