Both the area devoted to hops and hops production fell by about 18% between 1995 and 1999. However, this was partly offset by the fact that production, expressed in terms of alpha acid (which is the substance in hops used to produce beer) rose by 6%, as more varieties with a high alpha acid content were grown.
