The Commission today approved emergency aid of ECU 100 000 to help rebuild Venice's La Fenice opera house. The money is a symoblic gesture of European solidarity in the wake of this tragic accident. Mr Marcelino Oreja, Member of the Commission with responsibility for Culture, expressed his own and the Commission's sadness at the fire which destroyed La Fenice opera house in Venice last week, and promised support.
