Comme deux cas récents le démontrent, en décembre 2012, l'ancien ministre Duncan, dans sa discrétion, a nié la demande de la commission pour un programme d'aide financière aux participants au soutien de la révision du projet proposé sur l'exploitation de l'or et l'argent de la rivière Back, en notant dans la même lettre que le projet en est un de plusieurs mines proposées dans la région, qu'une « évaluation complète et cumulative des répercussions sera très importante » et que la proposition peut avoir des effets négatifs sur l'écosystème, l'habitat de la faune ou la récolte inuite, et causera une grande inquiétude publique.
