La norma internazionale ISO 14001:1996 è stata modificata nel 2004 in seguito ai lavori del comitato TC 207/SC1 Sistema di gestione ambientale dell’Organizzazione internazionale di normazione (ISO), allo scopo di migliorare la compatibilità della norma ISO 14001 con la norma ISO 9001 e di chiarire il testo della norma ISO 14001 senza dover aggiungere ulteriori requisiti.
