B. considerando che a tutt'oggi ufficialmente l'incidente ha fatto 33 vittime e 1.800 casi di cancro tiroideo in bambini e adolescenti e considerando che la relazione 2000 UNSCEAR sull'argomento praticamente ribadisce questa versione, nonostante tali affermazioni siano continuamente e strenuamente contestate dalle vittime, dagli esperti e dagli specialisti in materia e considerando che organi ufficiali come l'Organizzazione mondiale della Sanità (OMS) e l'Ufficio delle Nazioni Unite per il coordinamento delle questioni umanitarie (OCHA) hanno una posizione molto diversa,

B. whereas to date, the officially acknowledged health impact is limited to 33 people dead and 1 800 thyroid cancers in children and teenagers, and whereas the 2000 UNSCEAR report on the matter merely reinforces this attitude, though these claims are heavily and continually disputed by victims, experts and scientists in the field, and whereas official bodies like the World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) take a very different position,

4. Based on the important new scientific evidence suggesting doubts about aspects of the radiation risk model, particularly as concerns the effects of the Chernobyl fall-out, requests the Commission to arrange an epidemiological study of the effects of Chernobyl throughout wider Europe as a whole; also calls on the IAEA and UNSCEAR, as well as ICRP and Euratom, to re-examine the risk model;

Regrets the tendency of national and international authorities responsible for nuclear matters to close down debate, to avoid difficult argumentation, to call for peer-reviewed material, while not using it themselves, and regards this tendency as highly irresponsible, given the plight of the victims of nuclear accidents including Chernobyl, and the tendency of this approach to increase the risk of future victims; greatly regrets the reports of IAEA and UNSCEAR, which are based on partial and selected evidence; is particularly concerned about agreements put in place by IAEA with other UN institutions, Euratom and others, with a view ...[+++]
