Attualmente, nell'Unione europea vi sono due sistemi paralleli di brevetti volti a proteggere le invenzioni sul mercato interno: da un lato, i sistemi nazionali; dall'altro, il sistema europeo dei brevetti, nato sulla scorta di due trattati internazionali, la Convenzione di Monaco del 1973 e la Convenzione di Lussemburgo del 1975, cui si aggiunge il successivo accordo in materia di brevetti comunitari del 1989.
At present, two parallel systems exist in the EU for the protection of inventions within the internal market: the national arrangements, and the European patents system, created by two international treaties, namely the Munich Convention of 1973 and the Luxembourg Convention of 1975, together with the subsequent agreement on Community patents of 1989.
