Arsène Heitz, who designed the EU flag (originally as the flag of the Council of Europe), explained that he had drawn his inspiration from the Marian iconography to be found in Chapter 12 of the Book of Revelation: 'A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars'.
