The Commission has initially extended its patronage and provided Community impetus to a number of major sporting events, viz : the European Yacht Race (summer 1985 and 1987), the European Community Cycle Race (a cycle race for amateurs and professionals alike, organized in 1986 and 1987 with the help of the European Parliament) and the European Community Championship in Antwerp (the Commission's patronage of this tennis tournament did not involve any financial contribution).

The Commission of the European Communities has given its patronage to the third European Yacht Race to be run from 23 July to 14 August 1989 over a six-stage course from Hamburg to Toulon. Previous races were held in 1985 and 1987.

It is significant that it is precisely in those areas where the Community is beginning to establish itself (swimming, cycling and sailing) that projects are being set up which could eventually lead to the formation of European teams (e.g. preliminary contacts with the United States with a view to a European Community - United States swimming competition; Japanese plans to invite a European Community cycling team to Japan; proposal to enter a Community team in the next America's Cup yacht race in 1990).

Il est significatif que c'est précisément dans les domaines sportifs où l'existence de la Communauté commence à s'affirmer (natation, vélo, voile) que des projets commencent à s'ébaucher. Ces initiatives pourraient aboutir à la constitution d'équipes européennes (contacts préliminaires avec les Etats-Unis en vue d'une compétition de natation Communauté Européenne - Etats-Unis; projet japonais d'inviter une équipe communautaire de vélo au Japon; proposition visant à assurer une présence communautaire dans la prochaine Coupe America de voile 1990).
