What must be avoided is that the rapprochement with the United States—which is one of the great goals of the new foreign policy—be done at the expense of expectations and aspirations of large segments of the Canadian society who believe that, on the international scene, their country must remain the champion of human rights and social justice, the promoter of a rule-based global world and the most fervent advocate of conflict resolution through negotiations.
