In the interests of consistency with Bill C-23, they're using the expression “common-law partner”, but on the census, after the words “common-law partner”, they're putting in brackets “same-sex”, and for a different question, “common-law partner” with “opposite-sex” in brackets, and asking Canadians to check which of those two, if applicable, describes their relationship.
