L'actuel Médiateur, M. Jacob Söderman, premier à remplir cette fonction, a annoncé son intention de se retirer en mars 2003. C'est là peut être l'occasion de réfléchir sur le rôle et la place du Médiateur européen dans le cadre institutionnel de l'Union et sur les pratiques établies et les principes suivis par le Médiateur dans l'exercice de ses fonctions prévues par les traités ainsi que sur son statut.
As the present Ombudsman, Jacob Söderman, who has been the first to hold the office, has announced his intention to retire from office in March 2003, there is perhaps also reason to reflect on the role and place of the European Ombudsman in the institutional framework of the Union and on the practices established and principles followed by the Ombudsman in exercise of his duties under the Treaties and his Statute.
