Inoltre, con l'adozione del nuovo quadro finanziario pluriennale 2014-2020, sono disponibili per gli Stati membri Fondi strutturali e di investimento europei (fondi ESI) per un importo di almeno 100 miliardi di EUR per finanziare l'investimento nell'innovazione, in linea con le priorità della politica industriale. Nel periodo 2014-2020 gli investimenti nell'innovazione a valere sui fondi ESI saranno ispirati al concetto di "specializzazione intelligente" per consentire agli Stati membri e alle regioni di concentrare gli investimenti sui loro vantaggi comparativi e incoraggiare la creazione di catene di valore trans-europee.
