We do not have a country in which we have, with very few exceptions, concentrations of population such as you have in Europe, which led to the development of western European art, or the concentrations of population that you have in the United States, which make it possible for arts companies to be full-time arts companies and have the commercial success that the American arts companies have—the Metropolitan Opera, the Chicago Symphony, and so forth.
