Particular focus will be on possibilities of: (1) simplifying and speeding up the registration procedure, taking into account the requirements of the electronic age; (2) increasing legal certainty, such as by redefining what may constitute a trade mark; (3) clarifying the scope of trade mark rights inter alia as regards goods in various situations throughout the EU customs territory; (4) providing a framework for increased cooperation between the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM) at Alicante and national trade mark offices with the aim of harmonising administrative practice and developing common tools, such as tho ...[+++]se which offer far greater options for conducting priority searches, and watching the registry for infringing registrations; and (5) making the Directive more coherent with the Regulation, in particular, by further aligning the legal grounds of refusal for registration at European level, and (6) aligning the grounds for refusal and for coexistence under both the Directive and the Regulation to rules on geographical indications.

1. Turkey shall be informed of any decisions taken by the Community to amend the Common Customs Tariff, to suspend or reintroduce duties and any decision concerning tariff quotas or ceilings in sufficient time for it simultaneously to align the Turkish customs tariff on the Common Customs Tariff.
