harmonising the diagnosis and ensuring proficiency of testing within the Union by organising and operating periodic inter-laboratory comparative trials and external quality assurance exercises on the diagnosis of this disease at Union level and by the periodic transmission of the results of such trials to the Commission, the Member States, and the national reference laboratories concerned.

(b) coordinating the application by the national reference laboratories of the methods referred to in point (a), in particular, by organising regular inter-laboratory comparative testing and by ensuring appropriate follow-up of such comparative testing in accordance, where available, with internationally accepted protocols; they shall inform the competent authorities of the follow-up and results of such inter-laboratory comparative testing ;

(b)coordinating application by the national reference laboratories of the methods referred to in (a), in particular by organising comparative testing and by ensuring an appropriate follow-up of such comparative testing in accordance with internationally accepted protocols, when available.

(c)where appropriate, organise comparative tests between the official national laboratories and ensure an appropriate follow-up of such comparative testing.
